The Middleman and Other Stories Summary

This collection of stories contains stories mostly about the Indian or Middle East immigrants in America.

The first story called "The Middleman" is a story about a man from Iraq named Alfred working for a land-owner in South America. Alfred becomes a middleman between the land-owners attractive wife and her lover from her youth in plotting to kill and rob the land-owner.

The second story called "A Wife's Story" is about an Indian wife finding herself enjoying the freedom of western life and refusing to go back to India with her husband.

The third story titled "Loose Ends" is about an assassin living in Miami and describing his work and reasons why he became that way.

The fourth story called "Orbiting" is about an American girl coming from an Italian family finding true meaning of love in a gentlemanly and somewhat old-fashioned guy from Afghanistan.

The fifth story titled "Fighting for the Rebound" is about a guy going from one relationship to another and learning something new about himself from each of them.

The next story titled "The Tenant" is about an Indian failed student who finds herself lost in the western world and feeling alienated and shamed with traditions of the place she came from.

The seventh story called "Fathering" is about an American father who searched and found his lost daughter from Vietnam. This led to his wife being jealous and depressed. Despite that, he is a father now and his little girl is all that matters.

"Jasmine" is story about a girl from Trinidad who starts working as a maid for a lovely American couple. Jasmine falls in love with the husband and finds excitement in freedom of being able to be whatever she wants.

"Danny's Girls" is a story about a guy leading desperate girls from India to America by settling them to marriage with American men. He has a help of a young teenage boy who falls in love with one of the girls.

"Buried Lives" is a story about teacher from India who feels alien in his own home and wants to escape it to the sophisticated western world. He illegally ends up in Germany where he falls in love with the woman who shelters him and she feels the same way at the end.

The last story called "The Management of Grief" is a story about Indian families in Canada dealing with the grief of losing their loved ones in a horrible plane crash.
