The Mothers Analysis

The Mothers is a book that tells the story of Nadia Turner. Her mother has just committed suicide. Nadia is only seventeen. Her mother’s death has a negative impact on her. Robert Turner, Nadia’s father, is less concerned with her daughter’s affairs. As a result, Nadia is enjoying all the freedom she has been yearning for. She meets and starts a romantic relationship with Luke, a pastor’s son. The affair leads to pregnancy, but Nadia chooses to terminate it. Before long, Nadia meets Aubrey, a God-fearing girl. The two girls become friends. The relationship between Nadia, Aubrey, and Luke leads to consequences in their adulthood.

The novel details how the characters’ youth have an impact on the decisions they make during adulthood. The lives of the main characters are marked by stress. For instance, Nadia is stressed at a young age after her mother’s death. The injuries experienced by Luke derail his football career. Besides, the decisions they make to terminate the pregnancy at a young age have consequences in their adulthood. The community is harsh on Nadia because her mother chose to kill herself. Additionally, members of the community criticize Robert for failing to contain her daughter.

Nevertheless, after Robert learns that the pastor helped her daughter to abort, he confronts him. The pastor and the church community were against Robert's wife's suicide decision. However, after learning that the pastor helped Nadia to take an abortion, Robert sees this as a chance to shame him and the church community. The confrontation results in congregants leaving the pastor’s church. The reader gets insight into how some decisions can have lifetime consequences.
