The Muppet Christmas Carol Imagery

The Muppet Christmas Carol Imagery

Heatwave

We see the employees begging Scrooge for an extra shovel of coal as they are freezing while they work. Scrooge threatens to fire them all, and the image shows the employees have changed their clothes from business attire to grass skirts as they sing that a heatwave has begun to hit. The imagery reveals that Scrooge's is the only word that matters and his employees are simply lackeys.

Scrooge

We are introduced to Scrooge as he walks on the street. The camera tilts from a low angle, off-balance. We don't see his face only a shadowy figure with the light behind him. The imagery creates a a man who towers, no lords over everyone as an ominous figure and not a human being.

Pigs

We see two pigs in the streets of London as the film begins talking about just having had a find meal, and that they will now have lunch. The imagery reveals the contrast between the wealthy who are lavishing themselves with food, and the poor who have nothing to eat.

Joy

Scrooge watches with the Ghost of Christmas Present as Cratchit and his boy Tiny Tim joyfully come towards their home. The imagery reveals that though Cratchit is woefully underpaid and doesn't have much earthly possessions, the one thing he has is a point of view on life that is all about joy. Something Scrooge has not.
