Ask students to list the characters they have met so far in The Namesake. Make a list on the board, including brief descriptions of their personalities, inasmuch as they appear (obviously, we know more about Ashima and Ashoke at this point than we know about Alan and Judy Montgomery or Maya and Dilip Nandi, but include every character who seems interesting or relevant).
