What are Pixie’s responsibilities to her family? What do these duties suggest about her character?
Pixie is small and strong. She not only uses her wages to support her family on the reservation but also does chores around the house. She cooks, chops wood, carries water, and more. She is the first person in her family to get a “white-people job” at the factory. Pixie’s duties at home show that she has a strong sense of duty and respect for her family. She shoulders much of the burden because she is capable and knows what must be done. She is responsible, focused, and as her chore of woodchopping shows, she is strong in a way that may be unexpected for a woman.
