What do you think is Morrison's view of the role of the writer?
In her Nobel Lecture, Morrison uses an allegory to illustrate the prophetic role of a writer. The central figure of the old woman, for example, a guru who is regarded as deeply wise, is characterized as a "practiced writer." Thus Morrison links the role of a writer to that of an oracle, elevating the work of literature to a grand endeavor, performed in service of her people.

Why do you think Toni Morrison chooses to give her Nobel Lecture in the form of a fable?
Telling a fable pays homage to the power of oral tradition and folklore, genres of narrative that are in direct opposition the official, violent discourses that Morrison critiques. By sharing a legend from folk traditions, she honors the language of ordinary people who are often left out of the discourses of power, an important theme in Morrison's work.
