“An Integral Part” (Simile)
He did not relish his nose being treated as if it were a piece of inert matter. The abstract these words are taken from is sympathetic. Like any other person, Zenchi didn’t want to look in such an incongruous way. During the years the non-acceptance of own nose became very acute, and now it could be complemented with one’s non-acceptance. Zenchi looked for the help and support.
“An Operation” (Simile)
Like a patient undergoing an operation at the hands of a surgeon he does not place implicit trust - these words describe the monk in the moment of his nose being treated. All the procedure is quite ironical and the monk looks like being greatly humiliated. He was so harassed by his defect that he tried to conquer all the unpleasant and scaring sensations.
“The Loss” (Simile)
He would lapse into melancholy “like one sunken low recalleth his glory of bygone days”. Despite of getting the nose normal, Zenchi suddenly felt much more bleak than earlier. Gossip behind his back changed into almost open laughing. He wasn’t treated with respect and surely didn’t get any relief. His situation got still worse than it was. Zenchi now falls into deep thinking, when Ryunosuke Akutagawa as a student of human nature makes his readers think about their own problems in such an aspect.
