T-Chart, Word Web and Thread

Long-term Project
Objective:
Students will be able to develop active reading strategies and to consider both concrete and abstract ideas in the text.

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.R.1 ; CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.R.2
Structure:
Before students begin to read the book, ask them to create a two-column chart in their notebooks or on their computers, putting the word "Things" at the top left, and "Ideas" on the top right. As they read, ask them to jot down things/objects that seem important to the story (like "fish," "boat," "newspaper") on the left, and ideas (like "luck," "humility," "hope") on the right.
