Bird
The leader of the Huron tribe who is devastated in the aftermath of inter-tribal warfare that left his family dead. The killers are the Haudenosaunee tribe, a neighboring rival tribe. Bird swears his revenge on that country, vowing to slay at least a hundred of their men. Just when he is about to begin his rampage, he meets a missionary who wants to change his ways.
Crow
Originally named Christophe, this missionary to the Native people is captured by the Huron tribe. Upon his capture, he receives a new name, "Crow," and he begins his journey to converting the "savage and godless," back to their creator so to speak. Basically, everyone laughs him off, but his persistence eventually wears Bird thin.
Gosling
A competitor to Crow's influence, this tribal leader is also a medicine woman, and her miracles continue to be effective, making Crow's environment increasingly hostile, because she is urging them to throw off their attachment to tribal folklore. Gosling is forced to switch gears when the plague starts killing the Native people off, regardless of tribe or medicine.
Snow Falls
A young Iroquois girl who is said to have powers or a "gift" and is taken away by Bird's people (the Huron) after having her family (Iroquois) murdered in front of her. She is later taken into Bird's long house and is brought up within Huron culture. At first she felt distaste for her life and almost commits suicide due to the hate she carried for the people who murdered her family. Despite the hate she has for Bird (and Crow) and others, Snow later saves Crow from being killed by her adopted father, Bird, and proves herself a good-hearted person, at times.
