In 2012, the film adaptation of The Perks of Being a Wallflower was released, with Emma Watson, Ezra Miller, and Logan Lerman in starring roles. Chbosky only agreed to sell the rights to his story if he would also be able to write and direct the movie, which he did. When asked about this agreement, Chbosky told a reporter that he had written the book with a film adaptation in mind, but only if he would be a major part of it. The film was met with immense critical success and was nominated for many awards. In addition to its many nominations, it won the GLAAD Media Awards' Outstanding Film: Wide Release prize, the Independent Spirit Awards' Best First Feature prize, the People's Choice Awards' Favorite Drama prize, the Teen Choice Award for Best Drama, and the Indiana Film Critics Association's Best Adapted Screenplay. The three leads - Watson, Miller, and Lerman - were also praised and were nominated for several awards, winning honors at the Teen Choice Awards, People's Choice Awards, San Diego Film Critics Society Awards, and Hollywood Film Festival.
The film was produced by Mr. Mudd Productions, which has also produced other teen classics such as Juno and Ghost World. For the most part, the film stays true to the original novel, a situation which can be attributed to Chbosky's high level of involvement in the production.
