    To understand the figurative meaning of idioms and how they are manipulated in the text

    Structure:

    Much of the wordplay in The Phantom Tollbooth comes from characters taking idioms literally. This is why much of what the characters say doesn't make sense. Idioms are phrases that have a meaning beyond the meaning of the words themselves. Idioms are particular to a certain group of speakers, especially defined by geography, heritage, socio-economic class, and age.
