The Political Writings of John Locke is a collection of a few of Locke’s most important works that was edited by David Wootton, a professor of history and expert on English speaking countries, and others, such as France and Italy. The Political Writings of John Locke was first published in 1993.
John Locke was an English physician as well as a philosopher who lived during the 1600s. He was particularly influential during the Enlightenment, for his ideas on liberalism and especially the social contract theory. Back then, Locke influenced many of his contemporaries and intellectuals who succeeded him. Today, we can see his work in the US Declaration of Independence, and even in middle school classroom “social contracts.”
Though Locke had fascinating writing on the theory of mind, identity, and self, this collection presents his political works. All of these works were published by Locke and form a structure from which his political philosophy grows. The Political Writings of John Locke mostly includes Locke’s own ideas, and excludes his attacks on the political viewpoints of others during his time. In this collection, Locke touches on subjects ranging from Christianity to liberalism.
