Rin (Fang Runin)
The main protagonist of the novel. Rin is a war orphan from the Rooster Province who studies at Sinegard, the empire's elite military academy. She is intelligent, determined, and deeply ambitious. Throughout the story, she struggles with identity, power, and trauma as she discovers her shamanic abilities and becomes connected to the phoenix god.
Kitay (Chen Kitay)
Rin's closest friend at Sinegard. Kitay is extremely intelligent and analytical, excelling in strategy and academics. He often serves as Rin's moral anchor and strategic advisor. Despite not being physically strong, his mind becomes one of the most valuable tools in war.
Jiang Ziya (Master Jiang)
A mysterious teacher at Sinegard who secretly trains Rin in shamanism. He is a powerful shaman himself and helps Rin connect with the phoenix. Jiang is wise, calm, and deeply philosophical, often teaching Rin about sacrifices, balance, and the cost of power.
Altan Trengsin
A powerful and feared warrior known as the last surviving speeerly. Altan is also a shaman of the Phoenix and becomes a key figure in Rin's life. He represents both destruction and shared trauma, and his influence pushes Rin further into embracing power and war.
Nezha (Ying Nezha)
A fellow student at Sinegard and Rin's rival. He comes from a privileged background as the son of a powerful warlord. Nexha is talented, arrogant, and initially hostile toward Rin, but their relationship becomes more complex over time as they face shared struggles.
The phoenix
A destructive fire god that Rin becomes connected to. The phoenix represents power, rebirth, and destruction. It influences Rin's actions and becomes a central force in her transformation throughout the story.
Empress Su Daji
The ruler of Nikan. She is cunning, politically powerful, and deeply feared. Daji maintains control through manipulation and strategies, alliances, representing the corrupt political system. Rin is forced to fight against.
Commander Yueh
A military leader in the Nikara forces. He plays a role in organizing resistance against external enemies. He represents the traditional military structure and its struggles during war.
