Through the story of Peekay, the author has made an attempt to inspire people who are living as apartheid. Along with that Peekay has given a lesson of striving for one's aims in life. A man should never give up no matter what the circumstances may become. Peekay encounters hatred, bullying, violence and oppression. His chicken I.e. his granpa chook was killed by Jaapie Botha but he continued his journey.
He became a boxing champion after learning boxing from professionals as well as prisoners. He meets Doc, Geel Piet and Rasputin who play an important role in Peekay's life. Rasputin saves his life by sacrificing his own life. Peekay makes his name in a world where he was not supposed to win. He was oppressed by the blacks including the judge but he uses camouflage as a tool to continue his struggle.
The blacks have been portrayed as being prejudiced against the Whites and on certain shops Peekay reads that the services would only be provided to the blacks. It was quite strange for Peekay who believes in unity of all races. He was a symbol of hope for his community and even the blacks at mining holds him in great esteem. He converted all the derogatory remarks and his insult into respect through his actions. He has taught people that one should not depend on others and believe in the power of his own self.
