The Power Summary

The Power Summary

An historian and author, a male, lives in a matriarchal society in what is approximately the twenty-sixth century. He has found a manuscript that explains how his world came to be. Five thousand years previously, in the twenty-first century, society was still a patriarchy, but slowly, women emerged who were able to protect themselves by harnessing their secret power, the ability to shoot electrical currents from their fingertips.

Roxy's mother is attacked when Roxy is just a teen. She manages to fend off one of the attackers but the second gravely injures Roxy and kills her mother. Across the world from Roxy's native England, Tunde, an aspiring journalist, starts to notice that women are able to zap men with an electrical current from their fingertips. He knows this because he experiences it himself, when a girl he is attracted to renders him paralyzed before kissing him. Tunde decides to film the women who are discovering this new power within themselves . When he posts his films on the internet women across the world start to understand what is happening to them and the women around them. Allie, a foster child, kills her foster father when he attacks her. Margo, the mayor of a town in Wisconsin sees the same powers developing in her daughter. At first, everyone is frightened and confused. Allie, for example, takes refuge in a nearby convent, but slowly finds out how to use her powers for good. She combines her devout faith and her seemingly supernatural abilities to heal people and ultimately becomes a respected religious leader with a matriarchal doctrine. Margot, too, puts her daughter's powers to positive use, and develops training camps for women who have similar abilities so that they can learn how to use them properly for the benefit of womankind.

The movement spreads across the world, women quietly taking more power for themselves. There is a global epiphany when the President of Moldovia's wife initiates a coup from within and takes over the country. Margot, too, obtains higher office, becomeing Governor of Wisconsin by zapping her opponents during a debate. However, things gradually start to get more troubled. Allie sees that some of the women who have used their powers for the purpose of getting power for themselves are actually doing more harm in the world than good. She singles out Tatiana in Moldovia because she has been ordering the mass slaughter of men. Allie resets the world by taking it all the way back to the Stone Age so that the entire history of mankind can be re-written and structured as a matriarchy.

At the end of the book the author to whom the young man has sent the manuscript is kindly positive. She tells him it is indeed a good narrative, but in order for it to truly resonate, he should write it from the viewpoint of a woman and create a pen name for himself - much better that it sound as though it were written by a woman.
