"I knew, with youth's intuitive optimism, that something was not ended. Something had begun."

Oliver, p. 12

After helping Robert the previous night in the woods, Oliver has a feeling that this isn't the end of their meetings. He foreshadows the upcoming events with Evie. It can be argued that it is he who wants it to not be the end, even though at this point he doesn't want to admit it to himself.

"Here was I, devious and calculating, with a different accent, and unable to drive a car."

Oliver, p. 30

Oliver is looking at his neighbor and rival out of his window. He and Robert were best friends in childhood, up until Robert told him that Robert's father is a doctor and therefore he is better than his. This is where the social line between the two boys was drawn and where they stopped being friends. Oliver finds himself constantly competing with Robert, and with self-awareness calls himself devious and calculating.

"You could say that the only time she was ever calm and happy, with a relaxed, smiling face, they put her away until she was properly cured and unhappy again. You could say that, for example. But really, you could say nothing."

Oliver, p. 182

Oliver thinks about Bounce and how her life was governed by small town societal rules. She was the mirror of strictness and conservativeness of the town, but she was also unhappy. It is only when she was dubbed insane that Oliver saw her face relax and smile. The finality of his final words "you could say nothing" sums up his final message. It doesn't matter what could be said because she lived her life how she lived it and she didn't have the ability to choose her future.
