The Razor's Edge Metaphors and Similes

The Razor's Edge Metaphors and Similes

Delusion (Metaphor)

When Larry told Isabel that Ruysbroek was “a guy he hadn’t known in college”, he tried to “throw her off scent”. He didn’t want her to find out what kind of researches he wanted to conduct and what answers he wanted to find. This approach worked out for a significance of this statement “had escaped Isabel”.

A true workaholic (Metaphor)

When Gray’s business was ruined, he lost both his confidence and health. Although he had two children he adored and a wife he worshiped, he couldn’t be happy till he “gets back into harness”. His ability to make money helped him to feel useful and made his life meaningful. That was the main reason why the lack of work caused him not only emotional but physical pain.

Obligations (Metaphor)

Elliot Templeton was perfectly aware that his position in the society depended on his connections. Even if he didn’t like this or that person, but they were important enough to influence his life, he had to put up with them and be “servitable”. Those people “were cross of his life”, a burden he had to carry in order to live in a way he wanted.

Tiredness (Simile)

A long road, an exhausting day full of different activities and, finally, a late evening visit to a pub deprived Larry of his last strengths. He was so tired that as soon as he came home he fell on his bed and “slept like a log”.

Healthy and powerful (Simile)

Kosti was «as strong as an ox”. His physical abilities were so impressive that “if it had ever come to a scrap, knives or no knives, he’d have been a match for half a dozen of them together”. Even if his compatriots didn’t like him, they were afraid of him and tried not to mix with him at all.

Out of one’s wits (Simile)

As soon as Isabel found out what Larry’s real plans were, she decided that he was “as crazy as a coot”. His unwillingness to go into business to make money was so unusual that she thought he should be a madman.
