The Recruiting Officer Irony

The Recruiting Officer Irony

Irony of Mr. Worthy's name

Worthy seems to be an ironic name, as this character spends much of the play thinking himself unworthy of Melinda. Although at the beginning of the text he is not interested as she does not have personal wealth, she inherits money from her relative Lady Capital. After this, he pines after her and thinks himself unworthy of her.

Irony of wealth

Mr. Worthy initially rejects Melinda, as he believes he is above her station. However, Melinda soon comes into wealth, and she then rejects him as he does not have enough money. Here, Mr. Worthy is given a taste of his own medicine.

Irony of Justice Balance

Firstly, Justice Balance’s name is ironic. He works as a Judge, and therefore the fact his name is “balance” is ironic. Additionally, his home is the setting in which order is restored to the play, which is ironic because he is a judge.
