The Romance of the Forest Irony

The Romance of the Forest Irony

The irony of La Mottes

La Mottes is a family that has lived in France happily for many years with all the luxuries the world can offer. Ironically, the head of La Mottes' family has accumulated debts to finance the luxuries that he gives to his family. Satirically, La Mottes' family has no option but to escape from Paris and seek refuge elsewhere because the creditors are on La Mottes' neck.

The satire of the abandoned abbey in the forest

The reader finds it sardonic that a family that lived in opulence has no option but to live in an abbey which is a miserable structure without any amenity in the middle of the forest. La Mottes' family is trying to make way to a safer place, but their carriage breaks down in the middle of the forest, and they have to stay there for a while.

Adeline’s denial

When Adeline is living with La Mottes' family in the forest, she loves the place, and she decides to take a walk to exercise. When she sits down and starts singing, she notices a young man called Theodore standing beside her, and she falls in love with him instantly. Theodore also falls in love with Adeline at first sight. Ironically, Adeline is in denial, and she does not want to accept that she is in love.

Coincidental satire

When Theodore plans to save Adeline and run away with her, they are caught by Marquis and orders Theodore to get back to work, where punishment awaits him. Adeline is taken back to La Mottes, and Marquis orders Pierre to kill her without fail. Pierre loves Adeline as her daughter and makes up her mind to save her. Pierre directs Peter to escape with Adeline to a safe place. When Peter and Adeline run away, he takes her to a family that adopts her as its second daughter. The family where Adeline is adopted has two children, one daughter, and a son. Satirically, when the son returns home after some time, he becomes Theodore, Adeline's sole lover.

The fall of Marquis

Marquis is powerful, and he gets whatever he wants. In the text, the reader discovers that Marquis killed Adeline's father and took all his possessions. When Pierre and his family were trapped in the forest, they happened to live in an abbey that belonged to Marquis. Therefore, the Pierre family had no option but to pledge allegiance to Marquis. Marquis ordered Adeline to be given to him as his mistress, but she managed to run away. Sardonically, a time comes when the evils of Marquis are all discovered, and he is taken to jail. Therefore, all his possessions are given back to Adeline, and she lives a good life after that.
