Vladimir Girshkin
A Russian immigrant who lives in America in the 90's. He has a low-earning day job, and his parents openly criticize him for this. The novel is about Vladimir's life in debt and poverty.
Aleksander Rybakov
A mafia member who is notoriously aggressive and violent. He asks Girshkin for a favor, to help him get citizenship, and things go from bad to worse when Girshkin ends up being indebted to the mafioso.
Francesca
A beautiful, wealthy young woman who, despite his low status, accepts Vladimir into her fold, eventually causing him to spend too much money as he keeps up with her lavish lifestyle.
Jordi
A mob boss's son who attempts to seduce Vladimir. When Vladimir runs away from Jordi's attempts, he realizes he must help Rybakov because he requires safety.
