Who is Gösta Berling?
Gösta Berling is a defrocked priest, who enters the home of the Mistress of Ekeby, ultimately leading an uprising against her. Gösta had previously been rejected from the church due to excessive drinking, before being saved by the Mistress of Ekeby. He is originally depicted as a flawed and irresponsible man, but transforms through the novel and ultimately has some goodness.

What changes Gösta's mind?
Ultimately, seeing the estate in disarray and chaos causes his change of heart. Although he was originally on-board with the uprising against Mistress Ekeby, he sees the error of his ways. Ultimately, he understands that some kind of order is more desirable than complete chaos.

What happens after the Mistress of Ekeby is sent away?
After Mistress Ekeby's departure from her home, her estate descends into chaos. This is because the cavaliers have made a pact with Sintram, promising that they will do nothing for a whole year. As a result, the whole estate collapses into moral and economic ruin.
