Lucy Carlyle
The protagonist and narrator of the book, Lucy Joan Carlyle is a 15-year-old agent working at Lockwood & Co. She is a feisty young girl who has the abilities of mainly 'listening'; which is the ability able to hear the ghosts; along with the abilities of 'touch' and 'sight'. Her father had been a porter at the local railway station died when she was 5 years old, and her mother was a hard-working woman who had no energy or time to spare for the seven children, the youngest of whom is Lucy. When she was 8, she joins as an apprentice with Jacobs, but leaves after the Wythburn Mill incident, which led to the death of her colleagues. She goes to London for a fresh start and joins Lockwood & Co. as an agent.
Anthony Lockwood
Anthony Lockwood is the head of Lockwood & Co. He is described as a charismatic young man, having the special abilities of sharp 'sight'. Not much is described about his past other than that he is an orphan and that he inherited the building "35, Portland Row" from them. He had a sister who 6 years older than him, who died while sorting through a crate, which contained a ghost. After the death of his sister, Lockwood began training under Nigel Skyes. Lockwood is also a highly skilled fencer and made it to the finals during the fencing championships when he was very young age.
George Cubbins
George Cubbins is the deputy of Lockwood & Co. He is an all-rounder when it comes to talent, and has the ability of touch, and also minor skills in sight and listening. He is the researcher of the team, who prefers to research and have sufficient information about a place before visiting it. He does not get along with Lucy much.
Suzie Martin
Suzie Martin is the first client who appears in the novel. She is the daughter of Mrs. Hope, who was the original client, who had hired Lockwood & Co. to investigate the apparitions of her dead husband. Mrs. Hope doesn't come meet them, though, and sends her daughter Suzie instead. Suzie initially seems skeptical about the capabilities of an entirely adults-free organization but gives them the key and leaves soon.
Inspector Barnes
Inspector Montagu Barnes is an officer at DEPRAC (Department of Psychical Research and Control), which is the government organization created for tackling "The Problem." He is known for his strict adherence to the rules.
