What does De Beauvoir have to say about a socialist state?
De Beauvoir says that an egalitarian state was the failed promise of the Soviet Union. In such a state, women would be guaranteed an equal education and employment, and birth control and abortion would both be available. Marriage and motherhood would be voluntary, the latter supported by the state in the form of maternity leave and childcare. This, she says, was promised, but not delivered.
