The Senator Next Door is a memoir written by the first female senator of the United States Amy Klobuchar. Klobuchar discusses struggles in her early life and her political journey of rising through the political ranks. She additionally mentions the people who were crucial in molding her political life. The book tells of Klobuchar’s flawed but deeply personal life story.
In the town of Minneapolis Amy is born to an alcoholic father. Her mother was an elementary teacher and her grandparents were immigrants. This memoir recounts her journey tackling her parents’ divorce, her father’s addiction, and recovery, and her struggles to get in the U.S politics. Klobuchar is bold and as life throws challenges at her she is able to overcome them and rise higher to get a seat at the senate.
After the birth of her daughter, Klobuchar is forced out of the hospital while her infant baby is left in the intensive Care Unit. She discovers that according to the insurance cover rules she was not to be covered in that case. She is motivated and takes a lead in advocating for a law that warrants a 48-hour hospital stay for both the mother and the baby.
The memoir then discusses her life in the law business. She recounts a number of cases they went through with her workmates. Eventually she discusses her political ambitions that started with running for the county attorney followed by the senate position. Amy’s strong belief in democracy moulded her to become a successful leader.
