The Shipping News Summary

Unfortunately for him, Quoyle had been born in a family whose the most distinctive features were inherited cruelty and malice. Kindness was a sign of weakness and that was not tolerated. So, the poor boy was bullied by his own brother, constantly scolded by his father and mercilessly made fun of in school. All of that made him be unsure of himself, persuaded him that he was a failure, so he acted like one. A college dropout, the man changed one ridiculous job for another until he was hired as a reporter.

That gave him a sense of purpose; Quoyle was just happy to belong somewhere. Although, he was not a gifted journalist and his boss mistreated him constantly, he didn’t complain. Later on, the man had met a woman who became both his first big love and bane of his existence. The woman of his dreams, Petal, turned out to be a genuine abuser who couldn’t stand neither him nor herself. She wasn’t even interested in their two little daughters, Sunshine and Bunny. The only one time she cared to remember about them was a day when she decided to sell them to a person who was involved in sex traffic.

Fortunately for the girls, their father couldn’t imagine his life without them, so he did everything he could to save and return them. Petal and her new lover were not that lucky, they got in a car accident that took their lives away. Quoyle needed help, a new job, a new home and pretty much a new life, so he followed his aunt’s advice and agreed to move to the ancestors’ house on Newfoundland. There he started working as a reporter for a local newspaper. It would be a great underestimation to say that the new life was a difficult one. The house needed repairing badly, he was afraid of water and a boat was the only one suitable means of transport there. The girls’ whining and complains were unnerving and tiring.

Everything seemed too much. Not to mention that the newspaper Quoyle worked for had a terrible reputation, an unknown man – who later turned out to be his cousin – started appearing her their house, for he believed that he was a true owner of it, his aunt didn’t get her money for a great piece of work. Luckily for the protagonist, the bad times ended. His friend, Jack, helped him to renovate the house, he managed to achieve certain success in work and even met a woman who valued his kind heart, big soul and shared his value. They had a lovely wedding that seemed to be a promise of better future for both of them. Neither his family’s hideous past nor water nor future difficulties could scare him off. That Quoyle was anyone but that frightened fat boy his family used to despise and taunt whenever they felt bored. That was going to be a new start for him, his family and friends.
