How would you describe the overall tone of Premchand’s short story "The Shroud"?
For many students, the tone of "The Shroud" will come across as comic at turns, and tragic at others. Indeed, though the incompetence of Madhav and Ghisu serves to draw both the sympathy and the derision of the audience, their fate as Dalits is ultimately quite pitiable. This is shown above all by the conclusion of the story, in which both men use what little money they've been able to obtain by begging to drink themselves into a oblivious stupor.
