Structure:

The Sign of the Four is set in London, 1888. Drawing on details from the text, students should independently research the historical setting of the story. This will help students to conceptualize the events of the story and will provide additional historical and cultural context. In particular, encourage students to seek out maps of Victorian-era London, as well as illustrations of some of the real places described in the story.
