Why is Jacob reluctant to marry Wanda?
Jacob is Jewish and is devoutly religious. He is interested in Wanda but she is Pagan, which therefore creates some tension between his desires and his religious beliefs. As such, he is reluctant to marry Wanda due to conflicts with his religious belief.

How does Singer allude to the bible in this novel?
The Jewish faith and religious belief are the main themes of this novel, and therefore the bible is alluded to frequently. For example, the names in this text are largely biblical. Jacob changes his wife's name to Sarah, which is an allusion to Abraham and his wife. Additionally, he names his son Benjamin, as this is what the biblical Jacob named his son.

Why is Jacob ashamed to have a pagan wife?
Although Jacob loves Wanda, he is too ashamed to be with her due to a fear of judgment. His community is unhappy that she is pagan, and would only be happy with them marrying if she converts to Judaism. However, even if she did convert they still wouldn't be entirely contented, and would instead prefer for him to marry someone Jewish from birth.
