The Society of the Spectacle Character List

Georg Hegel

It is the Hegelian method that is foremost in the development of the philosophies expressed as the spectacle. This method develops as follows: a thesis produces a contradictory reaction termed the antithesis and the tension between the two is resolved through the creation of synthesis.

Karl Marx

Politically and economically, the Situationists aligned alongside the socialist end of the spectrum. Karl Marx is the author of The Communist Manifesto. Marxist economics are specifically applied to consumer capitalism with a special emphasis on Marxian concept of fetishization of the commodity.

Joseph Gabel

Gabel is a sociologist who provides a psychological foundation for the theoretical connections Debord makes that link consumer capitalist ideology with deviant psychology. A quote by Gabel establishes this foundation as a comparison of the effect of commodity fetishism to schizophrenia.

Vladimir Lenin

Lenin was, of course, the architect of the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution in Russia and later the first head of state of the Soviet Union. He is painted as a betrayer of the true Marxist ideal of working class revolution by virtue of not being a genuine adherent of communist ideology in the first place.
