The Splendid and the Vile Characters

The Splendid and the Vile Character List

Winston Churchill

The main character and focus of the book, Winston Churchill is most famous for being the Prime Minister of Great Britain during World War II, from 1940 to 1945. When he was elected, Churchill inherited a mess: leader of Nazi Germany Hitler had invaded and taken control of countless countries in Europe with more to follow. And the world was still scrambling to come up with a solution on how to deal with Hitler and his evil shock troops.

Churchill, who the Tories in England hoped would be a steadying force for the country, proved to be the man for the job. Fearless and intense, Churchill guided Great Britain through one of the most difficult periods in their history and helped to ensure victory against the evil Nazi war machine.

Adolf Hitler

The main antagonist of the book, Adolf Hitler was the Fuhrer (dictator) of Nazi Germany from 1934 until his suicide in 1945. A viciously racist man, Hitler was the evil brainchild behind the Holocaust and the campaigns against countries across the world - including countries in Europe, Asia, and North Africa.

An unrelenting and cruel man, it was Hitler who decided to initiate the bombing campaigns against Great Britain, which killed 45,000 Britons and gave the British people a renewed desire to fight against the Nazi war machine.

Franklin Roosevelt

Franklin Roosevelt was the President of the United States of America from 1933 to his death in 1945. In the early stages of World War II, Churchill had to convince Franklin Roosevelt to help the British people in their war effort. Roosevelt, to his credit, was eager to help the British people but was scared of the political and geopolitical repercussions involved in helping the British people. Regardless, Roosevelt devised a way to help the British people fight their war in a way that limited consequences and benefited the U.S. in the long term (through the "Lend-Lease" act).
