Michael Brock
Brock is a wealthy lawyer working at the law office of Drake and Sweeney. Married to his wife Claire, who doesn't play that much of a role in the story, Michael is the main character and protagonist of the novel. After doing research to find out about the homeless man who held up his office, he finds that that man had a motive, and realizes how much wealthy people ignore the lives of the ailing poor.
Ruby
When Michael quits his job as a lawyer, he meets Ruby, a charming homeless woman who is addicted to cocaine. However, she is still a kind person and wants to get over her addiction. Michael helps her to achieve this goal, and she hopes that one day she will be able to see her son again.
Megan
Ignoring the fact that he has a wife, Michael becomes romantic with Megan. Megan, who works at the same homeless shelter and clinic that Michael now does, is a kind woman who has devoted her life to helping those who have it harder off than she does.
Lontae Burton
One of the victims of the eviction of the home that Michael's boss sold, Lontae, and her three children die when snow blocks the exhaust pipe of their car, and it is flooded with carbon monoxide. The case of Lontae was indirectly due to the eviction, but goes to show that wealthy people, for the most part, are uninterested in the lives of the suffering.
