The Tales of the Argonauts Quotes

Quotes

"So they got along well together, - this little Christian girl with her shining cross hanging around her plump, white little neck; and this dark little Pagan, with his hideous porcelain god hidden away in his blouse."

narrator, Wan Lee, the Pagan

Here, the narrator talks about Wan Lee when he got adopted by a widow that had a daughter around Wan Lee's age. The two children start to get along together and Wan Lee starts to really like her; the little girl unconsciously influences him with her ways and her beliefs. Whether the narrator was talking ironically or seriously it is not clear. But either way this quote portrays the hatred that was present for otherness, for those who had different ways of living.

"This is not an evidence of death and gloom and sorrow, as are other monuments, but is a sign of life and light and hope, wherefore shall all know that he who lies under it is what men call - 'a fool'."

narrator, The Fool of Five Forks

This is the quote that perfectly describes the fool from the Five Forks. He sacrificed his life for the one he loves foolishly. He never lost hope that they will one day be together, and therefore his sacrifice should not represent sorrow.

"I think my horse understood, as well as myself, that it was the cabins that made the solitude human, and therefore unbearable..."

narrator, Baby Sylvester

The narrator goes to visit one of his friends' cabins and there are no people around when he gets there, only empty cabins. What makes the solitude unbearable is the evidence of human life there but there are no people, it makes the narrator even more conscious that he is alone. The empty cabins suggest abandonment and it creates an uneasy atmosphere.
