Why does Louis earn money?
Louis earns money because his father stole a trumpet for him. In the attempt to steal the trumpet, the glass window of the shopkeeper also broke off. Louis wanted to give the payment of trumpet and he also wanted to pay for the loss of glass window so he works at various places to earn money. He gets a job in a camp and then in a night club. After striving hard, he becomes able to collect the money and gives his father to return to the shopkeeper.

How does Louis convey his feelings to Serena?
Louis couldn’t speak since his birth because he was born mute. He feels lonely because of the lack of communication with others especially his beloved. A young boy Sam helps him in converting his feet into digits and in learning various music skills. Louis composes a song for Serena and he conveys his feelings to her through the song. Louis plays the trumpet in the zoo where Serena comes after losing her course. The song wins her heart and Serena understands his feelings for her.

Who was Sam and what is his importance in the story?
Sam was a young boy who helps Cob and his family. He becomes a dear friend of Louis and helps him in all the trials of his life. Sam helps Louis in getting admission in a school and then in getting different jobs. It was because of Sam that Louis became able to compose the song for Serena. Sam's assistance made him able to live his life with his beloved. Sam saves Serena's life by convincing the head of the zoo and there is a list of services which he offered to Louis.

Why does the shopkeeper shoot Cob?
Cob had stolen a trumpet for his son from the shopkeeper's window. Louis feels guilty about the stolen trumpet and, on Sam's suggestion, he earns money to return to the shopkeeper. When Cob goes to give the money for the trumpet along with an apology letter, the shopkeeper thinks that he might have come to steal another thing. He shoots Cob to save himself from further loss but he feels regretful because of shooting the innocent bird after knowing about the letter and the money.
