The Twelve Themes

Manipulation

Throughout the book, we can constantly see characters manipulating each other. We can take Babcock, who manipulates his way out of prison with the ill intention of harming everyone that comes in his path. We can see Tim Fanning getting manipulated by his professor who vowed his life to search the vampire plague that ended up infecting him. Even Amy is manipulated by the society around her, because of her willingness to care and find a cure.

Scientific Discovery

The entire book reflects the scientific discovery of finding a cure. It encompasses rabid animals and virals, taking into account the scientific aspects of the disease. There is science in almost every chapter of the book since it is the blood strains that can effectively cure the virus. We can also see a reflection of a society attacked by the plague and the emergency response taken to cure it.

Good vs. Evil

The concept of good vs. evil is reflected in all the characters personality trait. We see someone who wants to do good and cure the virals, such as Amy Belafonte. We see someone who has such ill intentions that he thinks he's a monster, reflected in Babcock. We even see a mixture of good and evil in Anthony Carter as he tries to battle the disease within himself but still ends up causing chaos and destruction to society.
