The Uninhabitable Earth explains how negligence and complacency of humans have put planet earth on danger. The author, David Wallace-Wells, calls for action to save the world. Currently, the world is threatened by aspects such as political instability, conspiracy theories, economic crises, wildfires, floods, and droughts. Human activities usually cause a climate crisis. Wallace-Wells admits that he is not an environmentalist but is concerned about the welfare of human beings. People who know nothing about climate change don’t worry about activities which cause global warming.
Wallace-Wells cements his argument by giving examples of three hurricanes that arose in the Atlantic Ocean in 2017. Hurricane Harvey hit Houston and flooded the area, causing irreparable damage. However, most of the people never noticed its impact. The same period, another Atlantic hurricane struck Ireland causing damages. He gives examples of wildfires and floods and their effects on human lives. In 2018, various places across the globe were struck by heat waves. For instance, a city in Oman experienced a record temperature of 121 degrees Fahrenheit. The same year, 54 people died in Canada due to heat waves. Wildfires were witnessed in the same period in the west of America. Floods and wildfires witnessed in recent years across the globe should cause alarm.
Despite wildfires and floods witnessed in different places across the world, Wallace-Wells acknowledges that some people know the impact of the problem but choose to ignore it. Climate deniers dismiss scientific consensus on global warming. A drive to emasculate public trust in scientific research has been systematized by people with ideological, political, and industrial interests. Even though floods, wildfires, and heat waves lead to the loss of properties and lives, skeptics of climate change undermine and neglect the efforts to prevent global warming.
