The Virgin Suicides Quotes

Quotes

“I’m, being the girls’ mother, should understand them more than anyone. But that's what's so frightening. I don't know. Once they're out of you, they're different, kids are. Leaving their home, they will become another's”

Mrs. Lisbon

Children are all-important to their parents, because they gave birth to children, presumably bring up them and give them all concern, endless love and warmth. Certainly, parents do not always get hearty thanks in return, but they always suffer various terrible tricks and careless actions of their children. Mrs. Lisbon does not have such patience; therefore, she strictly treats her daughters and punishes them. Her fear appears in rigor. Every parent has a fear. They are afraid of that moment, when children will grow up, leave the native home and forget about kindness and affection of parents. Children can become indifferent and parents will feel this pain. That is why Mrs. Lisbon takes care of her daughters so cautiously. Her fear does not allow giving them freedom.

“That girl didn't want to die. She just wanted out of that house. She wanted out of that decorating scheme.”

Mrs. Buell

Everyone knows that the most difficult time in personal development is when you are a teenager. The whole world seems to be completely different. Even simple problems which can be solved rapidly seem for teens to be the end of the world, but they do not want to share feelings of their inner world. Cecilia, being teenager, has various tastes, sound judgments and opinions, which are very different from adults’ ideas and solutions. She has her own world, which is filled with miracles and hopes. Mr. and Mrs. Lisbon do not know how to deal with this situation. They ask a psychologist for help and even try to have a frank conversation. However, all, what she needs is freedom and independence. You do not need to lock your children alone with their problems. Cecilia does not want to commit suicide. She is a dreamer and does not find herself in this world. When Cecilia jumps from the window, she becomes happy and gains her freedom.

“The essence of the suicides consisted not of sadness or mystery but simple selfishness.”

Narrator

Life is a precious gift from God, which should be guarded. Unfortunately, not all people appreciate this gift. Somebody just cannot appreciate it, because death takes away this opportunity. Other people do not desire to solve difficult problems and choose the easy way- to disappear and never come back. The decision of the Lisbon girls of this book to commit suicide was meaningless. Sisters did not spare each other and even their strict mom and dad, who still and all loved their daughters. Boys described them as kind and polite girls, but, if to be honest, they had selfishness, which was deeply hidden in the soul. Only heartless and miserable people refuse their lives. The girls took into their own hands decisions, but only God must decide to live or to die. They became too courageous to grasp the real freedom and became unsociable to live among people. They had left behind only memoirs about their short life.
