"I was never registered. I have no birth certificate, no National Insurance number, nothing to say I'm alive or have ever existed."
This gives us an introduction in the beginning of the book and the type of life that the characters in the book have to face in light of the Factory having some type of political power. This quote stresses the agitating conditions that citizens have to endure to sustain a lifestyle in this environment and gives reason to the type of actions that the characters have to take.
"I stood in the slanting sunlight, warm and yellow around me, the stench of burning flesh and grass on the wind, the smoke rising into the air from burrows and cadavers, grey and black, the sweet smell of leaking unburned petrol coming from the Flame-thrower where I'd left it, and I breathed deeply."
Frank emphasizes on his "murderous" lifestyle. After stating multiple times that he has murdered his family members, he brings his tendencies to the animals out on the land. This gives us a reflection of Frank's thought processes and how he is coping with the reign of the Factory. This also gives us a way to classify his interactions with other people, and his harsh aggressive nature.
