Benjamin argues throughout the essay that the function and nature of art has changed with technology that allows for easier mechanical reproduction. He says that more and more, art is being produced to be reproduced, dispelling with the concept of "aura" that is attached to a value in a specific time and place.

Distracted Experts

Regarding film, Benjamin argues that because the spectators are distanced from the actors through the use of a camera, spectators are thrust into the position of "expert" and "critic," being able to see the artificial reality of the film world from all angles and perspectives. However, Benjamin also argues that film as an artistic genre is meant to be consumed while distracted; it elides major contemplation through its constantly-changing nature. Thus, the "critics" of film are also largely unaware, or, as Benjamin puts it, "the public is an examiner, but an absent-minded one" (243).
