To a God Unknown Character List

Joseph Wayne

Joseph is the main protagonist who decided to leave his father's nest and get his own land to grow and expand his own family. Having arrived to his land Joseph starts to feel a strange connection and love to it and begins to behave in a manner that he believes will please the land. Joseph is pictured as having a strange influence over people and awakens feelings that are close to worship.

Elizabeth

Elizabeth is prim and proper teacher whose mainstream knowledge loses meaning in front of Joseph. When she marries Joseph she is aware of the life that awaits her and a life that she left behind. She often time grows homesick and has many stories to tell about her home.

Rama

Rama is Thomas's wife and a strong and motherly figure. She strictly rules the children and men around all except Joseph. She has a strange feeling of worship and fear towards Joseph.

Thomas

Thomas is Joseph's older brother and a man closer to animals than to people. He also enjoys being around animals more than people.

Burton

Burton is Joseph's religious brother who is afraid for the well-being of Joseph's soul. This leads him to destroy Joseph's precious oak tree which, it can be said, leads to the death of the entire land.

Benjy

Benjy is Joseph's drunkard brother whose inability to take care of himself makes everyone around him want to take care of him. Benjy of course takes advantage of this trait and sleeps around with all the women who pity him.

Juanito

Juanito is Joseph's friend and worker on his land. Juanito is Indian who wishes to be Castilian and tells everyone willing to believe that he is the latter. He also has feelings for Joseph that pull more towards worship than friendship.
