To the North Irony

The irony of the traveling agency

Emmeline Summers owns a traveling agency that aids people in visiting various parts of the world. The satire in this travel agency is that the package for travelers includes uncertainty! The reader wonders how travelers can travel to an agency that includes uncertainty in their packages. According to the readers' interpretation, the traveling agency intentionally avoids any form of risk because it transfers it to travelers.

The Satire of Cecilia

Cecilia and her sister-in-law Emmeline are very close, and they live together. Ironically, the two sisters-in-law have different ambitions and personalities. For instance, Emmeline is dedicated to her career and does everything to multiply her wealth. In contrast, Cecilia does not like working and uses her loyalties to buying expensive and fashionable clothes. Similarly, Cecilia attends expensive dinners, parties, and trips.

The elusive trait of beauty

If there is something that makes Cecilia and Emmeline distinct is the astounding beauty. Over the years, these two sisters-in-law have walked together and done everything together because everyone loves their beauty. Ironically, the same elusive trait of beauty results in their undoing when Markie comes into their lives. Cecilia first meets Markie on a train, and they have a candid and beautiful conversation. Markie confesses that Cecilia is very beautiful. However, when Cecilia invites Markie for dinner later, Markie realizes that Emmeline is the Jackpot of beauty, and he decides to strike a sexual relationship with her. Emmeline falls madly in love with Markie and refuses to listen to Cecilia's advice which at last interferes with the many years of closeness they had together.

The irony of love

The feeling of love is magical and can drive someone crazy. Emmeline is crazily in love with Markie the first time they meet at a dinner organized by Cecilia. Markie realizes that Emmeline is falling in love for the first time, and he takes advantage of every situation. According to Cecilia, it is not right to love someone deeply that you do not know their past. Unfortunately, Emmeline refuses to listen to her sister's advice, and the author hints that the ending was tragic.

The satirical meaning of the name 'Emmeline.'

Paradoxically, the name 'Emmeline' suggests that the holder is a woman who is gorgeous and outgoing. Ironically, Emmeline is portrayed as an icy blonde who is estranged and disconnected from people. The author describes Emmeline’s individuality as eccentric. However, the reader comprehends that Emmeline’s career requires such characteristics, but the problem arises when she wants to be sociable. Consequently, when Emmeline first falls in life, she is carried away by excitement, and she ends up being used as a sex object by Markie.
