What is a pirate? What is the difference between a pirate and a buccaneer? Between a buccaneer and a privateer?

This question is intended to test student's knowledge of the subject matter of the book. Although some students may have been attentive to the explanation about privateers and buccaneers in the book's preface, it will be helpful before moving forward to clear up distinctions. Students may also have questions about how pirates in this time period compared to ordinary sailors, whether piracy was really an act (theft) or an occupation (sailing the high seas), etc.
