    How does the governess know that the ghost is not a gentleman?

    Certainly not because of his clothes! They are, after all, the clothes of a gentleman – the governess's employer, apparently. The governess just seems convinced that the mysterious man is not a gentleman – either indicating that he is a bad, unkind person, or that he is lower-class. As we can see from her conversation with Mrs. Grose, the governess seems to believe both. Have your students consider the different definitions of the word “gentleman” and how the governess may conflate the two. Also consider people who the governess does consider gentlemen – namely, Miles.
