A sort of parallel London, or an underworld version of London that also acts in a vaguely symbiotic way with the city.

Smog

A combination of smoke and fog in its original sense, the Smog in the novel is a large cloud of toxic gas caused by pollution.

Brolly

English abbreviation for "umbrella"

UnBrella

A broken umbrella, or one that does not work anymore.

The mis-heard version of Clean Air Act

The Clean Air Act

In 1956, the British Parliament passed an act that was an attempt to combat the ill effects of pollution and its detrimental affects on the health of Londoners.

Royal Meteorological Society

The Royal Meteorological Society is a British institution with the Queen as its official patron. Its role is to engage the public in weather sciences and also to conduct atmospheric and weather research.

Shwazzy

This derives from the French, "choisie", meaning "chosen", and is translated by the inhabitants of UnLondon to mean The Chosen One.

An area of North London within the sound of Bow Bells, which makes both Zanna and Deeba, students at the school, traditional "Cockneys".

Curdle

Spoil, in relation specifically to dairy produce.

Wraith

Ghost, usually of a young person or child

Smombies

Zombies that are dead people reanimated by the contents of the Smog cloud

Smoglodyte

UnLondon version of a troglodyte; person disfigured by the effects of the Smog

Cannibal

A person who eats human flesh and organs

Despise

Hate, loathe

Prophecy

The act of seeing into the future and predicting what is going to happen

Verify

Make sure something is true or factual; finding proof to back something up

Shoo

Swat away in an irritated fashion
