Under This Unbroken Sky opens us with Theo being released from jail after being arrested and sentenced to a term of two years in prison. Theo had been arrested after stealing grain, which was originally his, to feed his family. During his time in prison, his wife Maria, worked tirelessly to provide for their five children. After his release, Theo and his family settle on land leased to them by their immediate family, Anne, and Stefan. Anne is Theo’s younger sister.
Theo and his wife are hardworking working individuals who are determined to provide a better future for their children. However, Anne and Stefan are the complete opposite, Stefan is an ex-soldier of the Russian Tsar who spends most of his time drinking and partying. Anne, like her husband, is lazy and always complains. The two are not accustomed to farming life.
As Theo and his wife work for long hours plowing the farm, Anne and Stefan enjoy what is left of their wealth. When harvest season begins, Theo’s hard work is rewarded and Stefan and his wife start depending on them for food. Theo is a kind man, his family shares what they have reaped with his sister-in-law. However, Stefan becomes jealous and organizes a plot to steal Theo’s harvest. Theo refuses to lose his hard-earned fruits. The two families are now immersed in a battle for the land and its produce.
