Identity

Identity is the biggest theme in the novel. Victor struggles with finding out who he is the entire novel, as he play so many characters to pursue what he's forced to. His time as a slave, he was treated as a number, not a person, and when he escaped and was working for the marshals, he was playing a character that still isn't himself

Monotony

The entire novel is relatively monotonous, and the author wants the reader to realize how bleak it makes Victor's life out to be. He does the same/similar thing every single day, and would have continued to do that for the rest of his life.

Individuality

The entire novel is essentially only with Victor and his thoughts alone, he interacts with others, but the whole novel is him and his thoughts alone. It shows how his decision to escape slavery left him alone, with no one to go to, all of the people he knew were in the plantation, he alludes to all the great times he had there, and how in a sense he misses it.

Empathy

Victor is a person that on the outside seems like he has no feelings, but on the inside he feels for everybody, especially Martha. And when he knew Martha needed help, despite his necessity to have to finish his task, he still helped her.
