Victory City Irony

Miracles

While walking, Pampa witnesses ironic miracles that would not be expected in real life. The miracles underscore the might of the goddess Pampa. For example," She saw a cobra using its hood to shield a pregnant frog from the heat in the sun. She saw a rabbit turn and face a dog that was hunting it, and bite the dog of the nose and make it run away." Ordinarily, the cobra would have attacked the frog and eaten it. Similarly, the dog would have pounced on the rabbit because the rabbit was prey. These two miracles underscore that the gods and goddesses can make impossibilities to transpire. The miracles prepare her for her role as a miracle worker.

Abstinence

Pampa arrives at Vidyasagar's dwelling, where he gives her food and water. Afterward, they live together but refrain from getting into sexual relations. Vidyasagar recounts, “They lived together easily enough, sleeping on opposite corners of the floor on the cave, and they got along fine, in part because the monk had worn a solemn vow of abstinence from the things of the flesh.” The Vidyasagar story is ironic because Rushdie writes that there are moments, he crosses the line in his treatment of Pampa. For Pampa, Vidyasagar was like other disingenuous men because although he claims to uphold the philosophies of peace and meditates about it, his actions are contradictory. He treats Pampa in a way contradictory to the philosophy of peace.

Pampa’s Poet’s Genius

Although Pampas is not educated, she writes impressively as if she were a genius. The sage is surprised by her gift. Rushdie writes, “After she began to speak, she admitted that she didn’t know she could write either and put the miracle of her literacy down to the benevolent intervention of the goddess.” The goddess empowers her to write although she has not been previously trained to write and compose poems. The gift is imperative in composing the actual history of Bisnaga. Her gift is another marvel that confirms goddess Pampa's power and determination to restore the kingdom through an uneducated girl.
