Walden Two Characters

Walden Two Character List

Frazier

Frazier is the founder of the Walden communities and a member of the Walden Two community. Frazier used to be just like the visitors, a member of a society he became sick of. After seeing how the modern day society failed to produce happy and productive members, he decided to start his own community. Frazier was the man behind the community but he was not treated any different than the people who came to the community later. Despite this, he admits that he could never completely eliminate the desire to rule over the others and he saw himself as a kind of God because he was the founder of the community.

Professor Burris

Professor Burris is a psychology professor who goes to Walden after two of his former students came to him asking about utopian societies. Burris is a very intelligent man who was able to find information about the community at Walden and even got into contact with Frazier, the man who was the founder of the community. Burris was excited to go and visit the community but he was wary about it at first. Frazier takes a personal interest in Burris because of his education and way of thinking and frequently questioned him about his opinion about the community. Burris decided to return to the society he came from at the end of the novel, thinking that the ties he had with the outside world were too strong for him to break. After reaching the city, Burris reached the conclusion that he wanted to be a member of Walden Two and thus he decided to return.

Augustine Castle

Castle is a philosophy professor at the college where Burris was also teaching. Castle is invited to be a part of the group by Burris and he agrees to go with them, being curious about the way of life the people and Walden had. Castle is the only one who is dissatisfied with what he finds at Walden and who is sure that the community is evil. Thus, he decides to return back home at the end of their stay.

Rogers

Rogers is one of the men who went to professor Burris to ask about the utopian society. Rogers was a former student at the university where Burris was a teacher at and he left the country to fight in the Second World War. After he returned from the War, he realized that he was dissatisfied with the society he lived in and thus decided to seek the perfect society. Thus, he and his girlfriend Barbara were among the visitors who went to Walden Two.

Barbara

Not many things are revealed about Barbara except the fact that she was Rogers’ girlfriend and that they used to bicker while at Walden Two. While Rogers was excited about the community, Barbara wanted to return to her old life and this difference created friction between them.

Steve

Steve is the second man who went to Burris to ask about the utopian society. Steve and Rogers meet while they were on the battlefield and after they returned home they became interested in utopian societies. Steve takes his girlfriend Mary with him to the community and after spending a few days there they decide to remain at Walden.

Mary

Mary is Steve’s girlfriend who also goes to Walden. She and Steve decide to remain behind at the end of their visit.
