Right away, this poem displays the dramatically different class experiences of two women, one of whom works within the other's home. The mistress can ask the servant to wear pearls for her, and even a servant who isn't secretly in love with her mistress would have to obey. Do students think this would be likely to happen today? What are the differences between their current time and the role of the servant at the time...
