Why does Morris think Europe will help change Dr. Sloper’s mind?
Discussion should focus on Chapter 23. When Catherine tells Morris she doesn’t care about seeing the sights of Europe, he exclaims to himself that she is “a dull woman.” What does this say about Morris’s own estimation of Catherine? Invite students to consider whether, at this point in the novel, they see Morris as a villain or a hero, and if Dr. Sloper has been right to oppose the marriage. Students can offer evidence for their assertions. Ask them to consider if Morris is being honest in the reasons he offers Catherine for going to Europe: that the experience will soften his opposition to the marriage....
