Paul Laurence Dunbar was one of the writers whose work would lay the foundation for the later Harlem Renaissance. Consider reading the writers who followed and were part of that movement, such as Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Claude McKay, and Countee Cullen.

Encourage students to delve deeper into Dunbar's work, both his other poetry and his fiction writing.
